The dream- A crack in the road
I had this dream.
She was sitting in the middle of the road on a wide crack that ran the breadth of the road. A speeding truck approaching toward her, smaller vehicles avoiding and going past her. I see this from a distance and stop. Some people go to her and try to make her stand. She resists. They finally pick her up and move her to the side to a footpath. She is simple and well dressed. Some people are muttering about her being mad, pagal. The first thought in my head, "mental breakdown". She seemed in her senses, just bored. Other thoughts pop up in my head, " Activist ", "Maybe she is protesting the bad roads".
People begin to disperse. Someone gets her a glass of water. She refuses politely. I walk up to her and ask her, "Are you ok?". Her head still facing the road she slants her eyes upwards and and nods as if to say yes. I crouch to her level. "Why were you sitting there?". She inhales deeply, " I was hoping that wide crack would open up and engulf me". Surprisingly I didn't think of the word "crazy", I just agree with her and I think of trying to get her home, "What's your name?". " Sita" She said. Suddenly I realise that she is sita and wants to be swallowed by earth. I ask her, "are you that Sita? Of Ram?". She nods. Its a dream so non of this is weird while I am in it. She says, " I am tired, I want it to end, earth is the only safe place but it is covered in tar, won't even crack properly ". I cross my legs and sit with her. People keep walking on the footpath, subconsciously avoiding us, like they avoid cowdung, beggars and broken pavings.
She turned to me, "Do you know why Ram is so big in India today?"
I mumble, "it started after the whole ram janmabhoomi thing?!".
"Yeah but why Ram? Why not krishna?".
I am not sure.
"Because Ram serves the idea of patriarchy, of one man, one woman, women being fought over for honour, the idea of chastity".
I muster an argument, "But Krishna too is discussed as a god who had many women, a philanderer. Not really an ideal man right?".
" No one is ideal. Krishna had fun, but maybe there was a choice for the women in his life. To love, to emote. Radha was married and also involved with Krishna, that love is justified in his story."
I am sitting, listening. Not sure. I don't know much. Amar chitra katha and my grand moms stories are my only reference.
She gets up and dusts her herself. Turns away from me and starts walking, then turns, "my husband is a good man, but he thinks duty is more important than love. He is insecure about being judged for his public image...it's a problem. Anyway bye. Thanks". She walks away.
I cross the road avoiding the speeding traffic, also carefully avoiding the wide crack in the road worried it might open and engulf me. My last thought as the dream is shifting is wondering if she will find that place in earth that will take her in.
